Summary

The highest FD rate in India on 16 Oct 2026 belongs to a co-operative bank: The Bapunagar Mahila Co-operative Bank Ltd., which operates in Gujarat, lists 9.00% for 2 years. Among the mainstream banks (public, private and small finance banks), Suryoday Small Finance Bank leads at 8.25% for 5 years, and small finance banks take 20 of the 25 top-five places across the five standard terms. The largest banks pay 5.75% to 6.65% for 1 to 5 years, well below the leaders. Senior citizens get up to 0.50 percentage points more at the banks shown. All rates are for a ₹5,00,000 deposit.

Our take. For most savers the realistic choice is the mainstream leaders, not the 9% headline: a co-operative bank is smaller, often serves one district or city, and you may not be able to open an account at all. If you can, split a large sum so each bank stays within the ₹5,00,000 insurance limit. And note the timing: the RBI raised the repo rate 9 days before this snapshot, so some banks may still revise their deposit rates.

Co-operative banks pay more, with caveats

Some state, district and urban co-operative banks list rates above every mainstream bank, up to 9.00% for 2 years. Treat them with care: co-operative banks are smaller, often serve a single district or city, and are supervised differently from commercial banks. Deposits in most of them are insured by DICGC up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank (principal and interest together), but not all are covered, so confirm it for your bank and read the DICGC explainer before depositing. Each rate is for the band shown beside it, and the bank's own page, linked from every row above, decides which band an exact-tenure deposit falls in.

The biggest lenders sit well below the leaders: up to 1.75 percentage points on the widest gap. SBI and Axis are left out because we had not re-confirmed their rates against the bank's own page in the three days before publication; we would rather omit a bank than show a stale number.

How much interest you might earn with a high-rate FD

What a cumulative FD earns at the best mainstream-bank rate for each term, against the best rate among the largest banks. Quarterly compounding, before tax.

At the best mainstream-bank rates, ₹5,00,000 earns ₹37,248 in 1 year, ₹1,34,121 in 3 years, ₹2,52,132 in 5 years, against ₹32,514, ₹1,05,809, ₹1,90,210 at the best of the largest banks. Co-operative banks pay more: at the 9.00% top rate (The Bapunagar Mahila Co-operative Bank Ltd., 2 years), the same ₹5,00,000 would earn ₹97,416, with the caveats above.

History of FD rates

How the policy rate and the government's deposit rates moved, and why bank FD rates follow.

Bank deposit rates are set by each bank, but they move with the RBI's policy repo rate and with how much money banks need to raise. When the RBI raised the repo rate by 250 basis points between May 2022 and February 2023, the cost of money rose across the system; when it cut by 125 basis points in 2025, banks cut their deposit rates in steps (see the 2025 section below). The repo rate has been 5.50% since 7 October 2026.

The Post Office time deposit is set by the government each quarter and is the one deposit rate with a clean public record. It rose from 5.50% to 6.90% for 1 year and from 6.70% to 7.50% for 5 years during 2023, and has not changed since July 2023 (1 year) and April 2023 (5 years).

RateScan.in tracks bank FD rates daily, but our verified history starts in September 2026, so we do not chart bank FD rates before then; the dated 2025 bank changes below come from press reports.

Changes of 0.10 points or more to standard general-category FDs at public, private and small finance banks, 10 Oct 2026 to 16 Oct 2026, from RateScan.in's daily tracking.

Historical FD rates 2025

2025 was a year of cuts: 125 basis points off the repo rate, and FD rate cuts at most large banks.

The RBI cut the repo rate in February, April, June and December 2025, from 6.50% to 5.25%. Large banks passed the cuts on to depositors within days or weeks, mostly by trimming rates on selected tenures and changing their special-rate deposits. These are the dated changes we could verify from press reports; they are a selection, not every change at every bank.

How the Reserve Bank of India impacts your FD options

The policy repo rate is the lever; your FD rate is set by your bank.

The repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends to banks. When it rises, banks' funding gets more expensive and they tend to raise the rates they pay on deposits, usually with a lag and not by the same amount at every bank. When it falls, deposit rates tend to fall. Banks also look at their own need for deposits, so two banks can react very differently to the same decision.

The 7 October 2026 decision

  • The Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.50%. It was the first increase since February 2023.
  • The stance moved from neutral to calibrated tightening. The standing deposit facility rate is 5.25%; the marginal standing facility and Bank Rate are 5.75%.
  • The RBI projects FY27 inflation at 5.2% and real GDP growth at 7.1%. The next meeting is on 2 to 4 December 2026.

Source: SCC Online report of the RBI statement. This article's rates are a snapshot taken 9 days after the decision, so some banks may not yet have revised their deposit rates.

What it means for your FD

An FD you already hold keeps its rate for the whole term, whatever the RBI does next. A repo change only affects the rates offered on new and renewed deposits.

New deposits may get better offers, but not automatically. After a hike, some banks raise rates quickly and others wait. If you are choosing between a short and a long term, a short one lets you reinvest at later rates; a long one locks in today's rate. Neither is right for everyone, and no one can say where rates go next.

Check the date on any rate you are comparing. A rate card published before 7 October may not reflect the decision. Each rate in this article is linked to the bank's own page with the date we last checked it.

Post Office rate changes

Set by the government every quarter. Unchanged since 2023 for most terms.

The Post Office time deposit rate is reset each quarter by the finance ministry. After the RBI's 2022 to 2023 hikes it rose in three steps, and it has held since. For October to December 2026 the government left small savings rates unchanged, so the 1-year deposit pays 6.90% and the 5-year 7.50%. Post Office deposits carry a sovereign guarantee, which is why many savers compare them with bank FDs. See all schemes on the Post Office schemes page.

How to choose the best FD account

The headline rate is one factor of six.

1. Match the term to when you need the money. Breaking an FD early often costs around 0.5% to 1% of the rate, and some banks do not allow it at all, so a slightly lower rate for a term you will actually hold beats a higher one you may have to cut short.

2. Check the insurance cover. DICGC insures up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, principal and interest combined. Above that, spreading deposits across banks keeps each one covered. How DICGC cover works.

3. Compare the sector, not just the rate. Small finance and co-operative banks usually pay more than the largest banks, in part because they are smaller and compete harder for deposits. Look at the bank's size, ratings and track record on its page on RateScan.in, linked from every table here.

4. Think about tax. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS once a depositor's interest at one bank passes a yearly threshold (₹50,000, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens, at the time of writing). The maturity figures above are before tax.

5. Pick cumulative or payout. A cumulative FD reinvests the interest and pays everything at maturity, which is why the earnings above grow faster; a payout FD pays interest monthly or quarterly for regular income at a slightly lower effective return.

6. Read the rate band and the date. Banks quote ranges such as "1 year to less than 2 years", and the rate applies to the band you land in. Confirm yours on the bank's page, linked in every table. Senior citizens usually get a higher rate, so compare the senior column if you qualify.

FD vs. savings account vs. recurring deposit account

Three ways to save at a bank: a lump sum, a monthly habit, or money you can reach any day.

Fixed and recurring deposits top out at 8.25% for 5 years at the best bank; the best savings account pays 4.85% on a ₹5,00,000 balance, in exchange for being able to withdraw any day.

Savings and recurring deposit rates are the highest verified general-category rates at public, private and small finance banks on 16 Oct 2026; a recurring deposit rate above the same bank's FD rate for that term is skipped as a likely mismatch. Savings rates are for a ₹5,00,000 balance; some banks pay more on larger balances. Large-bank savings rates cover the large banks with a verified rate. See the savings and recurring deposit pages for current rankings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest FD rate in India on 16 October 2026?

Across all sectors and states, The Bapunagar Mahila Co-operative Bank Ltd. (co-operative, Gujarat) had the highest regular FD rate we found on 16 October 2026: 9.00% for 2 years. Among the 36 mainstream (public, private and small finance) banks we ranked, Suryoday Small Finance Bank led at 8.25% for 5 years. Co-operative banks are smaller institutions that often serve one district or city, so check the insurance cover and whether you can open an account.

Which bank has the best 1-year FD rate?

On 16 October 2026, Suryoday Small Finance Bank and Ujjivan Small Finance Bank led the 1-year tenure at 7.25%. Among the largest banks the best 1-year rate was 6.35%.

What is the best FD rate for senior citizens?

Suryoday Small Finance Bank offered the highest senior citizen FD rate we found among public, private and small finance banks on 16 October 2026: 8.50% for 5 years.

Which type of bank pays the highest FD rates?

On 16 October 2026, co-operative banks listed the highest rates, up to 9.00% (The Bapunagar Mahila Co-operative Bank Ltd., 2 years), followed by small finance banks at 8.25%. Public sector banks reached 6.70%. Higher rates usually come with a smaller institution, so check the insurance cover and the bank's standing.

Do FD rates differ by state?

Yes. The best 1-year rate we found ranged from 7.00% (7 states and UTs) to 8.25% in Maharashtra, because local co-operative and regional banks list rates the nationwide banks do not. The map and state tables on this page show the leader for each state and union territory.

Did the RBI raise the repo rate in October 2026?

Yes. On 7 October 2026 the Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, the first increase since February 2023, and moved its stance to calibrated tightening. Banks decide their own deposit rates, so FD rates may follow with a lag. An FD you already hold keeps its rate.

Is a Post Office time deposit better than a bank FD?

On 16 October 2026 the Post Office time deposit paid 6.90% for 1 year and 7.50% for 5 years, above the best of the largest banks but below the leading small finance banks (7.25% and 8.25%). It carries a sovereign guarantee, while bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5,00,000.

Are small finance bank FDs safe?

Small finance banks are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and their deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, principal and interest together. Keeping each bank's deposits within that limit keeps them fully covered.

Is this page updated daily?

No. It is a snapshot of rates on 16 October 2026 and stays as published. Rates change often, so use the live FD rates page on RateScan.in for current rankings and always confirm on the bank's own page.

How we compiled this

RateScan.in reads each bank's own published rate page or circular every day. For this snapshot we used 216 banks whose fixed deposit rates were re-confirmed against the bank's own source within 3 days of 16 Oct 2026. The five-per-tenure tables cover the 36 public, private and small finance banks that publish a rate for each tenure. The sector, customer type and state tables also include regional rural and co-operative banks; foreign banks, payments banks and the Post Office are left out of those tables. State tables count the nationwide banks plus those that operate in the state.

We rank the regular FD for a ₹5,00,000 deposit and leave out special-scheme FDs (such as fixed-date or festival deposits) and rows we could not verify. Tenures are 6 months, 1, 2, 3 and 5 years. Where a bank's rate bands touch at the exact tenure, we use the rate the band structure clearly gives, and the lower one when it is ambiguous. Senior citizen means 60 and above, super senior citizen 80 and above. Recurring deposit and savings rates follow the same verification rules.

The repo rate history, Post Office rates and the 2025 bank rate changes do not come from our scraper. They are compiled from the press and RBI-statement reports linked in each section, checked on 16 October 2026; where a source gave only a month, we show only the month.

RateScan.in has no ads and no affiliate links, and no bank pays to be listed or ranked. This page is a dated snapshot and is not updated after publication, so the rates may have changed since. Confirm the current rate on the bank's own page before you deposit; the live FD rates page shows today's rankings.
