How RateScan.in works

Data sources, update frequency, bank coverage, and DICGC insurance — everything about how rates are collected and verified.

What is RateScan.in?

RateScan.in is an independent, ad-free rate directory for Indian bank deposits — fixed deposits (FD), recurring deposits (RD), and savings accounts — plus Post Office small savings schemes. It is maintained as a public tool with no advertising and no affiliate commissions. Rates are ordered by yield, not by who pays.

The site currently covers 82 banks and 3,978 individual rate rows across all seven RBI-recognised bank categories. 86% of rows are sourced directly from the bank's own published pages.

How rates are collected

Each bank has a dedicated adapter — a small program that fetches and parses that bank's rate page daily. There are two collection methods:

MethodLabelHow it works
Live scrape OFFICIAL The adapter fetches the bank's own rate page (HTML table or structured PDF) and parses it programmatically. Rates are taken directly from the bank's server on each run. 65 of 82 banks use this method (86% of all rate rows).
Hardcoded from official PDF OFFICIAL Some banks publish rates as PDFs that cannot be machine-fetched (the server blocks automated requests). For these, rates are manually verified from the official PDF and hardcoded. The source URL points to the original PDF for attribution. The effective date reflects the document's stated date.
Aggregated source AGGREGATOR A small number of rates (14% of rows, 4 banks) are sourced from a third-party aggregator or news source when direct access is unavailable. These are replaced with OFFICIAL data as soon as the bank's site becomes accessible.

Every rate row carries a source URL, an effective date (the date the bank published the rate), and a quality label. Where a bank has both OFFICIAL and AGGREGATOR rows, the AGGREGATOR rows are removed once the OFFICIAL data is verified.

Update frequency & freshness badges

The ingest pipeline runs daily. Each successful run stamps a checkedAt date on every rate row it produces. Two badges surface freshness status on bank pages and the directory:

BadgeMeaning
(none)Rates verified within the last 30 days. Current.
○ Under VerificationRates have not been re-verified in more than 30 days. The displayed rates may still be accurate; they are pending the next successful check against the bank's site.
⚠ StaleShown inside a rate's source detail modal when a specific rate row is more than 150 days old. Treat with extra caution and verify on the bank's site.

Bank coverage

82 banks across all seven RBI-recognised categories are tracked. Coverage of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) is a particular focus — RateScan.in lists all 28 sponsored RRBs, which most rate aggregators do not cover.

Deposit insurance (DICGC)

All deposits in RBI-licensed banks (Public, Private, Small Finance, Payments, Foreign, and Regional Rural banks) are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, across all branches combined. This covers principal and interest together.

Post Office small savings schemes (NSC, KVP, Time Deposit, RD, Savings Account, MIS, etc.) are not DICGC-insured. They carry a direct sovereign guarantee from the Government of India via the Consolidated Fund of India, which is generally considered stronger than deposit insurance.

Verify your bank's DICGC registration and current insurance limit at dicgc.org.in.
